Jump Cut Editor: Claude Cuts on Words From the Transcript

Cut Express · · 4 min read

Cut Express is a jump cut editor you run by chatting with Claude. Claude reads a timestamped transcript of your talking-head clip, picks where to cut on the words themselves and hides each cut with a punch-in zoom if you want. Cut Express renders the MP4.

You don’t scrub a waveform looking for gaps. You tell Claude what to keep, and it cuts on the sentence boundaries.

What is a jump cut?

A jump cut is a cut between two parts of the same shot, taken from the same camera angle. Because the framing doesn’t change, the subject seems to “jump” a little in position. In film it was once treated as a mistake. On YouTube and short-form, it became the normal way to edit someone talking to a camera.

Why do talking-head creators use jump cuts?

When you talk to a camera, you rarely speak in finished paragraphs. You pause, restart or repeat a phrase. Jump cuts remove all of that while keeping one continuous take.

For the creator, the gain is pace: the video makes the same points in less time. For the viewer, there is less waiting between ideas. That matters most in the first seconds of a video. See the first 3 seconds of a reel.

How does Claude decide where to cut?

Cut Express gives Claude two things for each clip:

  1. A transcript with timestamps. Claude can see every word and when it was said.
  2. Contact sheets. Frames from the clip, labelled with their source time, so Claude can see what’s happening on screen.

With the transcript, Claude cuts on words, not only on silence. It can drop a false start, like “So the… so the first thing”, and keep the clean version. If you said the same line twice, it can keep the take that lands. It cuts between sentences instead of mid-word.

A silence-only tool removes gaps, but keeps the repeated lines. If you only need the gaps gone, our guide to removing silences with jump cuts covers that.

How do I make jump cuts with Claude?

  1. Connect Cut Express to Claude. Use the setup guide.
  2. Upload your talking-head clip. Through the upload panel or Claude Code.
  3. Ask Claude to transcribe and tighten it. Say how tight, and whether to keep any breathing room.
  4. Say which takes to keep. Or let Claude pick the cleanest one when you repeat a line.
  5. Add zooms and captions. Then render and give notes.

Transcribe this and jump cut it. Remove false starts and repeated lines. When I say a line twice, keep the second one. Leave a short beat after each main point.

How do I hide jump cuts?

A punch-in zoom is the usual fix. On some cuts the frame scales in a little, so the jump reads as a deliberate change of framing. Alternating between a normal and a punched-in frame keeps the video moving.

Other ways to cover a cut:

Method How it works When to use it
Punch-in zoom Frame scales in on the next segment Default for talking heads
B-roll Cover the cut with other footage When you have relevant clips
Text or graphic A title or stat card over the cut To stress a point
Sound effect A soft whoosh or hit on the cut Faster, more energetic edits

Punch in a little on every other cut. Put b-roll from the “desk” clips over the cuts in the middle section. Add pop captions.

Captions follow the edit. When Claude cuts a word, it’s gone from the captions too, because both come from the same timeline. See word-by-word captions.

Should I check the cuts myself?

Yes. Claude makes the first pass from the transcript, but you know which jokes or asides matter. Watch the render and say what to restore: “Bring back the part about my first camera.” Every version is kept, so nothing is lost.

When is a timeline editor better for jump cuts?

Chat editing works well for talking heads and tutorials. A timeline still helps when you want to set each cut by hand, frame by frame. That’s often the case for comedy timing, where a few frames can change a joke. It also helps with multi-camera shoots you want to switch yourself. In those cases you may prefer to drag the cuts directly.

FAQ

Does Claude cut only on silences?
No. Claude reads the transcript, so it can cut false starts and repeated lines as well as pauses.

Can I control how tight the cuts are?
Yes. Ask for “tight, no gaps” or “keep a natural breath between sentences”.

How much does the transcript cost?
0.1 credit per minute of audio, once per file. Pro includes 200 credits a month.

Can I make vertical and horizontal versions?
Yes. Ask for “now a 9:16 version” and Claude edits the same timeline.
