CapCut Alternative: Describe the Edit, Get the MP4

Cut Express · · 5 min read

If you’re tired of dragging clips on a timeline or hunting for the right template, Cut Express is a CapCut alternative where Claude makes the edit decisions instead of you. You describe the video in a chat with Claude, Claude makes every cut and caption, and Cut Express renders the MP4.

If you enjoy hands-on editing on your phone, or you rely on CapCut’s template library, stay with CapCut. It’s better at both.

Why do people look for a CapCut alternative?

You’re probably not unhappy with CapCut’s features. You’re tired of the work around them.

A typical 30-second reel in a timeline editor means scrubbing through footage to find the good takes. Then you trim each clip by hand, line up captions and try templates until one fits. On a phone, that’s a lot of small, precise taps.

Templates help, but they come with their own problem. Your reel ends up looking like everyone else’s that used the same one, and your footage has to bend to fit its cuts.

Some people also run into the paywall. Per CapCut’s pricing page, the free plan has no blanket watermark, but some Pro templates and effects carry one.

How is Cut Express different from CapCut?

In CapCut, you make every decision: where each cut lands and which caption style fits. You also pick which template to try next. In Cut Express, Claude makes those decisions. It looks at contact sheets of your clips (frames labelled with source time) and reads a timestamped transcript. Then it writes the edit.

Say you upload four minutes of talking-to-camera footage with a few false starts. You type:

Make a 30-second reel from this. Start with the line about quitting my job, drop the pauses and retakes, word-by-word captions, warm look.

Claude finds that line in the transcript, cuts the false starts and times captions to each word. It picks one of 73 looks and sets its intensity. You get a rendered MP4 in the chat. If the intro drags, you say “make the intro tighter” and the next version renders. Every version is kept.

There are no templates and no beat-matching. Claude plans each edit around the clips you uploaded, so it won’t look like a stock template.

When is CapCut the better choice?

CapCut wins in a few clear cases:

  • You like editing by hand. If dragging clips and nudging captions is part of the fun, a chat will feel like less control, not more.
  • You want a specific trending template. CapCut has a large template library, while Cut Express has no templates by design.
  • You edit on your phone. CapCut’s hands-on mobile timeline is built for that. Cut Express runs inside an AI chat app.
  • You need a free plan. CapCut has one. Cut Express has a 14-day trial, then a monthly plan.

If you want a trending format without a template, Cut Express can do something else. Drop the reel you like next to your clips. Claude breaks it down shot by shot and rebuilds it with your footage. The reference itself is never cut in.

How do you switch?

You don’t have to export anything from CapCut. Bring your raw clips.

  1. Connect Cut Express to Claude. Add it as a custom connector and sign in. The setup guide walks through it.
  2. Upload your footage. Use the upload panel in the chat, or upload from Claude Code for local folders.
  3. Describe the video. Say the length, the format (9:16 or 16:9), the hook and the feel.
  4. Watch the render and give notes. Ask for changes in plain words. Each note renders a new version.

Here’s a reel I like and my clips from the weekend. Recreate the pacing and the on-screen text style with my footage, 9:16.

Same video, but a 16:9 version for YouTube with the captions lower.

FAQ

Is Cut Express free like CapCut?
No. It has a 14-day free trial. Cancel before it ends and nothing is charged. After that, Pro is $19/month.

Does Cut Express have templates?
No. Claude builds each edit for your footage. To copy a style, give it a reference reel and it rebuilds the structure with your clips.

Can I still adjust the edit myself?
You adjust it by asking. “Cut the second clip earlier” or “make the captions bigger” edits the same timeline and renders the next version. You can also download the timeline.

I’m also comparing clip tools. How does this compare to OpusClip?
OpusClip auto-finds viral clips in long videos. We cover that in OpusClip alternative.
