ChatGPT Video Editor: Can ChatGPT Edit Videos?
ChatGPT is not a video editor on its own: it can’t produce an edited video file from your footage. To use ChatGPT as a video editor, connect a video MCP server such as Cut Express as a custom connector. ChatGPT then drives the edit, and the connected tool renders the MP4; finished renders are on the home page.
Below you’ll see what that setup looks like, which tools work, and how to connect Cut Express in ChatGPT.
Why can’t ChatGPT edit my video by itself?
ChatGPT can read text and images, and it can suggest where to cut. What it lacks is a video renderer for your files. It can’t take three clips from your phone and hand back a captioned MP4 on its own.
So asking ChatGPT to “edit this video” gets you advice or a shot list, because the chat has no video editor or renderer built for your footage. You still do the cutting somewhere else.
How does ChatGPT edit video with a connector?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI call outside tools. A video MCP server gives ChatGPT tools to look at your footage and render an edit. ChatGPT makes the decisions. The server does the video processing.
With Cut Express, the split looks like this:
| Step | Who does it |
|---|---|
| Show the footage as frames and a transcript | Cut Express |
| Choose every cut and caption | ChatGPT |
| Write the edit as a JSON timeline | ChatGPT |
| Render the MP4 | Cut Express, on its own servers |
ChatGPT sees each clip as contact sheets, frames labelled with their source time. It also gets a timestamped transcript of what’s said. That’s how it knows where a sentence starts and which take is the clean one.
Which ChatGPT video editor tools are there?
Several video tools offer an MCP server that ChatGPT can use. They return different things:
- Cut Express returns a finished MP4. ChatGPT decides every edit and Cut Express renders it.
- OpusClip (https://mcp.opus.pro/mcp) is an auto-clipper. Its AI finds short clips in a long video, and the MCP can export them and schedule posts.
- Descript‘s MCP runs Underlord edits inside Descript and exports transcripts or timelines. It can’t export an MP4 file directly through MCP.
- invideo Editor MCP (https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp) builds rough cuts on invideo’s timeline that you can finish there or in a pro editor.
- Clueso (https://connect.clueso.io/mcp) turns screen recordings into product demos. Video export needs a paid Clueso plan.
If you want a file you can post, pick a tool that renders one. If you finish edits in another app anyway, a rough-cut tool works. For a wider look at the category, read AI video editor.
How do I connect Cut Express to ChatGPT?
You need a ChatGPT setup that supports custom connectors or MCP. Then:
- Add Cut Express as a custom connector. Get the Cut Express server address from the setup guide and add it in ChatGPT’s connector settings.
- Sign in to your Cut Express account when ChatGPT asks.
- Upload your footage in the web upload panel. ChatGPT doesn’t show Cut Express’s in-chat upload panel, so you add files on the web. Each file can be up to 2 GB on Pro. See how to upload footage.
- Ask for the edit in the chat. ChatGPT lists your media, inspects the clips and writes the timeline.
- Open the render and revise. Ask for changes and ChatGPT edits the same timeline. Every version is kept.
Cut my three uploaded clips into a 40-second vertical reel. Start on the funniest line, remove the pauses and add word-by-word captions in the karaoke style.
Make the intro two seconds shorter and add a whoosh on each cut.
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for editing with Cut Express?
Both can drive the same edit, since both talk to the same MCP server. The difference is in the chat itself.
In Claude.ai and Claude Desktop, Cut Express opens an upload panel and a video player right in the conversation. You drop files in and watch each version without leaving the chat. In ChatGPT, you upload through the web panel instead.
If you live in ChatGPT already, it works fine. If you want to upload and watch each version inside the chat, Claude has the edge. For that route, read can Claude edit videos.
What can the ChatGPT video editor do with Cut Express?
The editing tools are the same whichever AI drives them:
- Cuts: drop pauses and false starts, speed ramps, reverse, freeze frames, punch-in zooms, 21 transitions.
- Captions: word-by-word, timed to speech, in styles such as pop or boxed.
- Looks: 73 cinematic looks with intensity, plus color sliders.
- Sound: AI voice-over from a script, sound effects from a description, music that ducks under the voice.
- Stock: stock videos and photos from Pixabay, and music from a stock library, searched and added from the chat.
- Formats: 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, or 16:9 for YouTube.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT edit a video I upload in the chat?
Not into a finished file on its own. With Cut Express connected, upload in the web panel and ChatGPT edits from there.
Does ChatGPT see my video?
It sees contact sheets and a timestamped transcript that Cut Express makes from each clip. That’s enough to choose cuts by time.
Who pays for the AI part?
ChatGPT’s thinking runs on your own ChatGPT plan. Cut Express charges render minutes for the video, plus credits for audio AI such as voice-over.
Can I switch between ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Your media is stored in your Cut Express account, so whichever AI you connect can use the same files.
