Submagic Alternative: The Whole Edit, Not Just Captions

Cut Express · · 5 min read

If you use Submagic for captions but still edit the clip somewhere else first, Cut Express is a Submagic alternative that does both in one place. Claude makes the cuts and writes word-by-word captions, then picks the look and sound. Cut Express renders the MP4.

If you post a high volume of short clips and mainly want trendy animated captions in one click, Submagic is built for exactly that. Stay with it.

Why do people look for a Submagic alternative?

Submagic is good at a narrow job. You drop in a short clip, and it adds auto captions and polish like zooms and b-roll. If you post many vertical clips a week, one click per clip adds up.

The friction usually starts at the edges of that job:

The clip still has to be cut first. Captions make a clip watchable. They don’t decide which 30 seconds of a 6-minute take should be the clip.

Plans count videos and cap their length. Per Submagic’s pricing page, as of October 2026:

  • Starter, $19/mo: 15 videos, up to 2 minutes each
  • Pro, $39/mo: 40 videos, up to 5 minutes each
  • Business, $69/mo: 100 videos, up to 30 minutes each

If your videos run long, or you make many short ones, those limits shape how you work.

You want a horizontal version. If you also post to YouTube in 16:9, you want the same edit in both formats.

How is Cut Express different from Submagic?

Submagic polishes a clip. Cut Express edits it from raw footage.

Claude looks at contact sheets of your footage (frames labelled with source time) and a timestamped transcript. It decides where to cut and drops pauses and false starts. It ends on the sentence that lands. Captions are word-by-word and timed to speech, in six styles from pop to minimal. On top of that, Claude can add one of 73 looks and place sound effects on the cuts. Music ducks under your voice by itself.

Start with a raw 5-minute take:

Find the 35 seconds where I explain the main idea best and make it a 9:16 reel. Pop captions, two words per line, yellow highlight on the key word. Add a hit sound on the first cut and a light film look.

Then you ask:

Now a 16:9 version of the same edit for YouTube, captions at the bottom.

Both versions come from the same timeline, and both are kept. For more on caption styles, see word-by-word captions.

Pricing works differently too. Cut Express charges by render minutes, the length of the videos you render. Pro includes 60 render minutes a month. That’s about 120 videos of 30 seconds, or six 10-minute videos. Re-renders count toward minutes, and failed renders never do.

When is Submagic the better choice?

Submagic is the better pick when:

  • Your clips are already cut. If you only need captions and polish on finished clips, you don’t need a full editor.
  • You want trendy animated captions fast. Submagic applies them in one click.
  • You work at high volume on short clips. Submagic is designed for many short videos with little input from you.

Cut Express needs a bit more from you: a sentence or two describing the edit. In return, Claude decides the cuts and pacing too.

How do you switch?

  1. Connect Cut Express to Claude. Use the setup guide for Claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code.
  2. Upload raw footage, not finished clips. That gives Claude room to choose the best part.
  3. Ask for a transcript. It costs 0.1 credit per minute of audio, once per file. Pro includes 200 credits.
  4. Describe the clip and the caption look. Name a style, a color and a position.
  5. Review and give notes. “Bigger captions”, “cut the last line”. Each note renders a new version.

FAQ

Does Cut Express have Submagic-style animated captions?
It has word-by-word captions in six styles, with control over font, color, size and position. It doesn’t use Submagic’s templates.

Is there a per-video limit on Cut Express?
No video count. You’re limited by render minutes (60 on Pro, 180 on Ultra) and video length (up to 10 minutes on Pro, 30 on Ultra).

Do re-renders use up my minutes?
Yes. Every render counts its length toward your render minutes, including re-renders after a note. Failed renders never count.

Can Cut Express find clips in a long video?
Yes. Claude can find highlight “moments” in long footage. For a dedicated auto-clipper, see OpusClip alternative.
