Can Claude Edit Videos? Yes, With a Video MCP Connected
Yes, Claude can edit videos once you connect a video MCP server to it. On its own, Claude can’t render a video file. A connector gives it a way to look at your footage and a tool that does the cutting and exporting.
What you get back depends on the tool you connect. Some return a finished MP4. Others return clips, a rough cut on a timeline, or code you render yourself.
Why can’t Claude edit video on its own?
Claude reads text and images. It has no video renderer built in, so it can’t trim a clip, burn in captions or export an MP4 without help.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how that help arrives. It lets Claude call outside tools. A video MCP server gives Claude tools like “inspect this clip” and “render this timeline”. Claude decides what to do, and the server processes the video.
What does Claude actually see in my footage?
Claude doesn’t watch video the way you do. A video tool has to turn your footage into something Claude can read. In Cut Express that means two things:
- Contact sheets. Grids of frames from each clip, each frame labelled with its source time. Claude can see who is on screen, where the camera moves and which shots are dark or blurry.
- A timestamped transcript. What is said, and when. This is how Claude finds the best take of a line and drops the false starts.
For long footage, such as a stream or a podcast you want to cut into Shorts, Cut Express can also find “moments”: the stretches where something happens, each with its own frame sheet. Claude then zooms into a stretch before it picks in and out points.
Not every video MCP shows Claude the footage like this. Some send the file to their own AI and let it decide. It’s worth checking before you pick one.
What are my options for editing video with Claude?
There are five common routes. Each one suits a different job.
- An editor that renders a finished MP4. Claude makes every edit decision and the tool renders the file. Cut Express works this way.
- An auto-clipper. You hand over a long video and the tool’s AI finds short clips. OpusClip has an MCP server (https://mcp.opus.pro/mcp) for Claude that can submit a project, export clips and schedule posts. We compare the two in OpusClip alternative.
- An editor that builds a project or rough cut. Claude drives an app’s own editor, and you finish there. Descript’s MCP runs its Underlord edits and exports transcripts or timelines, but can’t export an MP4 file directly through MCP. The invideo Editor MCP builds rough cuts on its timeline and exports to Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve.
- Video as code. Remotion is a framework for making videos in React. With Claude Code, Claude writes the code and you render it on your own machine or servers.
- A DIY ffmpeg MCP. Open-source servers like ffmpeg-mcp-lite (https://github.com/kevinwatt/ffmpeg-mcp-lite) give Claude basic tools such as trim, merge, compress and burn subtitles. They’re free and local.
If you already work in Premiere, the “Adobe for creativity” Claude connector gives Claude access to Creative Cloud tools.
How do these options compare?
| Option | What you get back | Who decides the cuts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cut Express | Finished MP4 | Claude, from contact sheets and transcript | Reels, Shorts, YouTube from your own footage |
| OpusClip MCP | Short clips from a long video | OpusClip’s AI | Clipping podcasts and long videos at volume |
| Descript MCP | Edited project, share link or timeline export | Underlord, inside Descript | Podcasts, edit-by-transcript, audio cleanup |
| invideo Editor MCP | Rough cut on invideo’s timeline | invideo, guided by Claude | Rough cuts you finish in a pro editor |
| Remotion | React code you render | Claude writes code | Data-driven or templated video at scale |
| ffmpeg MCP | Processed file on your machine | Claude, with basic tools | Free, private, simple jobs |
Pick by the output you want. If you need a file to post today, a tool that renders a finished MP4 saves a step. If you plan to finish in Premiere or Descript anyway, a rough-cut tool fits.
How do I edit a video with Claude using Cut Express?
- Connect Cut Express to Claude. Add it as a custom connector in Claude.ai or Claude Desktop and sign in. In Claude Code it’s one command with a key. The setup guide has each option.
- Upload your clips. In Claude.ai and Desktop an upload panel opens in the chat. In Claude Code, Claude uploads local files and folders for you. Files can be up to 2 GB each on Pro.
- Describe the video. Say the format and how long it should run.
- Let Claude look first. It reads the contact sheets and the transcript, then writes the edit as a small JSON timeline.
- Watch and revise. The render plays in the chat. Ask for changes and Claude edits the same timeline. Every version is kept.
Make a 30-second vertical reel from these three clips. Open on the line about quitting my job, cut the pauses, add bold word-by-word captions and a warm film look.
A 30-second reel at 1080p usually renders in well under a minute. Then you revise in plain words:
Tighten the intro and make a 16:9 version for YouTube.

- Recreate a reel: drop in a reference video and Claude rebuilds it shot by shot with your footage. The reference is never cut in.
FAQ
Can Claude watch a video?
Not as a stream. A video tool turns footage into frames and a transcript that Claude reads. Cut Express sends contact sheets with source times plus a timestamped transcript.
Does Claude need a paid plan to edit video?
The thinking runs on your own Claude plan. Cut Express renders on its own servers. Check that your Claude setup supports custom connectors or MCP.
Can Claude edit videos in ChatGPT too?
Claude is Anthropic’s model, so no. But ChatGPT can drive Cut Express as a custom connector. See can ChatGPT edit videos.
Is Cut Express the only way to edit video in Claude?
No. Descript, invideo, OpusClip, Clueso and Adobe also connect to Claude. What sets Cut Express apart is the output: Claude makes the edit decisions and you get a finished MP4.
