Video Editing MCP: 5 Types of Server and How to Pick

Cut Express · · 6 min read

A video editing MCP is a server that gives an AI like Claude or ChatGPT tools to work on video. The AI decides what to do, and the server does the video work, such as clipping, building a rough cut or rendering an MP4. Servers differ in what the AI can see and what you get back.

Pick by output. Auto-clippers return short clips. Rough-cut editors return a project you finish in their app. MP4 renderers like Cut Express return a finished file. Code frameworks and local ffmpeg servers suit developers.

What is a video MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside tools. A video MCP server exposes tools such as “inspect clip” or “export”. Add the server to any MCP client, such as Claude or ChatGPT, and the AI can call those tools in the chat.

Language models can’t render video on their own. The MCP server turns the AI’s decisions into something real: a file, a project or clips.

What types of video editing MCP are there?

There are five main types. They solve different jobs.

1. Auto-clippers

You give the tool a long video. Its own AI finds short clips worth posting.

  • OpusClip (https://mcp.opus.pro/mcp) works in Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients. Its tools submit a project and list the clips it found. They can also export clips and schedule publishing. As of October 2026, the app has a Free plan (watermark, clips expire after 3 days), Starter at $15/month and Pro at $29/month.

Good for clipping podcasts and long videos at volume.

2. Project or rough-cut editors

The AI drives an editing app, and the result lives in that app. You finish there or export to a pro editor.

  • Descript has an official MCP for Claude, ChatGPT and any MCP client (https://www.descript.com/mcp). It imports media, runs Underlord edits, publishes share links and exports transcripts or timelines (EDL, FCPXML, XML). It can’t export an MP4 file directly through MCP.
  • invideo Editor MCP (https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp) works in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code. It builds rough cuts on invideo’s timeline, removes retakes and pauses, adds b-roll and subtitles, and exports to Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve.
  • ChatCut (https://chatcut.io) is an AI editor and generator with a Claude Code plugin. Chat prompts land on a multi-track timeline you can adjust by hand, with XML export to Resolve, CapCut, Premiere or Final Cut.
  • Adobe for creativity, Anthropic’s Claude connector launched April 29, 2026, gives Claude access to Creative Cloud tools including Premiere.

Good when you already finish in one of these apps.

3. Editors that render a finished MP4

The AI makes the edit decisions and the server renders the final file.

  • Cut Express (https://cut.express) shows Claude each clip as contact sheets and a timestamped transcript. Claude writes a JSON timeline of cuts, captions, sound and grade, and Cut Express renders the MP4 on its own servers.

Good when you want a file you can post without another app.

4. Code frameworks

The AI writes code that renders video.

  • Remotion (https://www.remotion.dev/docs/ai/claude-code) is an open-source React framework. With Claude Code, you add Remotion’s agent skills and prompt. You render on your machine or your own infrastructure. It’s free for individuals and teams up to 3; larger companies need a license (as of October 2026).

Good for programmatic, data-driven video and custom motion design.

5. Local ffmpeg MCP servers

Open-source servers that wrap ffmpeg on your own machine.

They’re free, and files never leave your machine. You won’t get word-timed caption styles or AI voice, and there’s no render cloud.

A sixth, narrower case: Clueso (https://connect.clueso.io/mcp) turns screen recordings into narrated product demos. Its MCP is on all plans, but video export needs a paid plan.

How do the video MCP types compare?

Type Example AI sees the footage? You get back Cost model
Auto-clipper OpusClip Its own AI picks clips Short clips App plan
Rough-cut editor Descript, invideo, ChatCut Inside the app Project, share link or timeline App plan
MP4 renderer Cut Express Contact sheets + transcript Finished MP4 Render minutes
Code framework Remotion Not its focus Code you render Free or license
Local ffmpeg ffmpeg-mcp-lite Only if you set it up Processed file Free

What should I check before picking a video MCP?

  1. Does the AI see the footage? Some servers show the AI frames and a transcript. Others hand the file to their own AI. If you want Claude to choose cuts, check what it can see.
  2. Does it return a finished file? Some return an MP4. Others return a project, a share link or a timeline you finish elsewhere.
  3. Are captions timed to speech? Look for word-by-word captions and styles you can change. A burned-in subtitle file is a different thing.
  4. Does it handle audio? Check whether music ducks under the voice, and whether it can add voice-over.
  5. How is it priced? Per render minute, per video, per seat or free. Match it to how much you post.
  6. Which clients does it support? Check that it runs where you work. Upload often works differently in a desktop chat than in a terminal.

Which is the best MCP server for video editing?

It depends on the job. There isn’t one best video MCP server for everything.

  • Clipping long videos at volume: an auto-clipper like OpusClip.
  • Podcasts and edit-by-transcript: Descript.
  • Rough cuts you finish in Premiere or Resolve: invideo Editor MCP or Adobe.
  • Templated video from data: Remotion.
  • Free, private, simple jobs: an ffmpeg MCP.
  • Finished reels, Shorts or YouTube edits from your own footage: Cut Express.

Where does Cut Express fit?

Cut Express is an MP4-rendering editor. Claude makes every edit decision from contact sheets and the transcript. There are no templates and no beat-matching. You get a finished MP4, rendered on Cut Express servers.

The edit is a JSON timeline with every version saved, so each revision changes the same timeline:

Make a 30-second 9:16 reel from these clips. Open on the line about the first sale, cut the pauses, add pop captions and a whoosh on each cut.

Now a 16:9 version for YouTube with the same cuts.

You can also drop a reference reel next to your clips. Claude breaks it down shot by shot and rebuilds it with your footage. Pricing is by render minutes: Pro is $19/month after a 14-day trial, Ultra $49/month.

FAQ

Can Claude edit video with an MCP?
Yes. Claude can’t render video alone, but with a video MCP connected it can drive the edit. See can Claude edit videos.

Is there a free video editing MCP?
Yes. Open-source ffmpeg MCP servers are free and run locally. They cover basics like trim, merge and burning subtitles.

Does a video MCP work in ChatGPT?
Many do. OpusClip, Descript, invideo, Clueso and Cut Express list ChatGPT support.

What’s the difference between an MCP video editor and an auto-clipper?
An auto-clipper’s own AI picks the clips. In an MCP video editor like Cut Express, Claude makes the edit decisions and the server renders them.
