AI Video Editor: You Describe the Edit, Claude Makes It
An AI video editor is software that makes editing decisions for you: where to cut, what to caption, which part of a long video to keep. Cut Express is one built for Claude. You upload your clips in the chat and describe the video. Claude looks at the footage, writes every cut, caption, grade and sound, and Cut Express renders the MP4 in 9:16 or 16:9.
“AI video editor” covers tools that do different jobs, though. Some generate footage from a prompt, some only add captions, and some cut clips out of a long video. Knowing which kind you need saves you a few trials.
What are the kinds of AI video editor?
| Kind | What it does | Good for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generative video | Makes new footage from a text prompt | Concept shots, visuals you can’t film | Editing footage you already have |
| Clip finders | Scans a long video and suggests short clips | Podcasts and streams cut into Shorts | A planned edit with your own structure |
| Caption apps | Transcribes speech and styles animated captions | Talking-head Reels with captions | B-roll, sound design, multi-clip edits |
| Timeline editors with AI features | A classic editor plus auto captions, silence removal and effects | People who like editing by hand | People who don’t want to touch a timeline |
| Chat-driven editors (MCP) | Your AI assistant reads the footage and writes the whole edit | Weekly creators with raw clips and notes in their head | Frame-by-frame control in a GUI |
Cut Express is the last kind. It doesn’t generate footage and it doesn’t make the decisions on its own: Claude does, from what you ask. For more on the category, see video editing MCP servers.
How does an AI edit video it can’t watch?
Claude can’t play a video file, so Cut Express gives it two ways to see one:
- Contact sheets. Grids of frames from each clip, each frame labelled with its source time. Claude sees what is on screen and when.
- Transcripts. What is said in the clip, word by word, with timestamps. A transcript costs 0.1 credit per minute of audio, once per file.
For long footage like streams or gameplay, Claude can also ask for the stretches where something happens, ranked as highlights. Then it zooms into one with denser frames before it picks the in and out points. It never guesses a timestamp. The gameplay highlights guide shows that flow.
What can Claude do in the edit?
Everything Claude writes goes into one timeline, and Cut Express renders it:
- Cuts. In and out points per clip, speed, reverse, freeze frames, speed ramps and jump cuts on words.
- Framing. Crop, fit a landscape clip into 9:16 over a blurred copy, punch-in zooms, slow zoom and pan. See horizontal to vertical.
- Captions. Word-timed captions from the transcript in six presets, any of 83 fonts, your colours. See word-by-word captions.
- Colour. 73 looks with an intensity, plus sliders for contrast, warmth and the rest. See AI color grading.
- Sound. Your clips’ own sound, music with ducking under voice, 63 built-in sound effects (free), and generated voice-overs on credits.
- Graphics. Text overlays, lower thirds, logos, split screens, green screen, and animated motion graphics for ads and explainers.
You don’t write any of this yourself, because Claude turns plain notes into the timeline. Real renders and the prompts that made them are on the home page. You say “30 seconds, start with the line about the price, pop captions, warm look,” and Claude turns that into the timeline.
How do I edit a video with an AI video editor?
- Connect Cut Express to Claude. Add it as a connector in Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code or ChatGPT. The setup guide takes a few minutes.
- Send your footage. Drop files in the upload panel in the chat, or upload from Claude Code for a local folder. Files go up to 2 GB on Pro and 4 GB on Ultra.
- Describe the video. Length, format, the hook, the feel, what to cut out.
- Watch the render. The MP4 plays in the chat.
- Give notes. “Tighter intro,” “captions lower,” “swap the music.” Each note renders a new version and every version is kept.

Is there a free AI video editor?
Several AI video editors have free plans, often with a watermark, a length cap or a limit on exports. Cut Express has no free plan. It has a 14-day free trial: 14 days free, then $19/mo. Cancel before day 14 and you pay nothing.
| Plan | Price | Rendered video a month | Credits a month | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $19/month | 60 minutes | 200 | 1080p |
| Ultra | $49/month | 180 minutes | 500 | 2K or 1080p |
Credits pay for voices, sound effects and transcripts. Renders themselves use render minutes, not credits.
When is another AI video editor the better pick?
- You want footage generated from text. Cut Express edits what you upload; it doesn’t make new video.
- You want to drag clips yourself. A timeline editor with AI features fits better. We compare a few in CapCut alternative and Descript alternative.
- You only need clips from a long podcast, picked for you. A clip finder does that with fewer words. See Opus Clip alternative.
- You need it free forever. Cut Express is a paid monthly plan after the trial.
FAQ
Does Cut Express use its own AI?
No. Claude (or ChatGPT) decides the edit. Cut Express inspects the footage, makes voices and sound effects when asked, and renders.
Can it post to TikTok or YouTube?
No. You download the MP4 and post it yourself.
Can I change one thing without redoing the edit?
Yes. Ask for the change and Claude edits the same timeline. The next version renders and the old one stays.
Does it work in ChatGPT?
Yes, as a custom connector. See can ChatGPT edit videos.
Try it on your own footage
Upload a few clips and describe the video you want.
