Remotion Claude Code vs Cut Express: Which One to Use?
Remotion with Claude means Claude Code writes React code that Remotion renders into video, on your machine or your own servers. Pick it for video built from code and data. Cut Express is the better fit when you need to cut real camera footage into captioned reels or YouTube videos, without a codebase.
Both work with Claude. They start from different inputs.
What is Remotion, and how does it work with Claude?
Remotion is an open-source framework for making videos in React. You describe the video as React code and can feed it data, so one template can render many variants.
Remotion has a guide for Claude Code (https://www.remotion.dev/docs/ai/claude-code). The flow is:
- Create a project with
npx create-video. - Add Remotion’s agent skills so Claude Code knows the API.
- Prompt Claude Code to build or change the video.
- Render it locally or on your own infrastructure.
You own the code and the render. That’s the point, and it’s also the cost: you need a Node and React project, and you manage rendering.
What is Cut Express?
Cut Express is a video editor that lives in your chat. It connects to Claude through MCP. Claude looks at your footage through contact sheets (frames labelled with source time) and a timestamped transcript. Then it writes the edit as a small JSON timeline, and Cut Express renders the MP4 on its own servers.
There’s no project to set up and no renderer to host. You upload clips, describe the video and revise in plain words.
Cut these two takes into a 45-second vertical reel. Use the second take of the opening line, drop the pauses, add karaoke captions and a light golden hour look.
How do Remotion and Cut Express compare?
| Remotion + Claude Code | Cut Express + Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | Code and data | Your camera footage |
| What Claude writes | React components | A JSON timeline of cuts, captions, sound, grade |
| Claude reviews your footage | Not its focus | Contact sheets + transcript |
| Where it renders | Your machine or your infra | Cut Express servers |
| Setup | Node/React project, agent skills | Add a connector and sign in |
| Captions from speech | You build them | Word-by-word, timed to speech, built in |
| Voice-over and SFX | You bring them | AI voice and sound effects from text, using credits |
| Motion design | Unlimited, in React | Animated titles, kinetic text, charts, stat cards |
| Claude setup | Claude Code (Remotion’s guide) | Claude.ai, Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code |
| Cost | Free for individuals and teams up to 3 | 14-day trial, then Pro $19/month |
How much does Remotion cost?
Remotion is free for individuals, companies of up to 3 people and non-profits. Companies with 4 or more people need a company license. As of October 2026, the Creators license is $25/month per seat, and the Automators license is $0.01 per render with a $100/month minimum. Check their license page (https://www.remotion.pro/license) for current terms.
Rendering costs are separate, since you run the renders. On a laptop that’s your time and CPU. At scale it’s your cloud bill.
Cut Express is $19/month on Pro after a 14-day free trial, with 60 render minutes. Ultra is $49/month with 180 render minutes and 2K output. The rendering is included.
When is Remotion the better choice?
Remotion wins when the video comes from code or data:
- Personalized video at scale. One template, a different name or number in each render.
- Data-driven video. Charts or numbers that change with the data you pass in.
- Custom motion design. Anything you can build in React, with full control of every frame.
- Your own pipeline. Renders that run on your own machines, under your control.
If you’re a developer and the video is mostly generated graphics, Remotion is the one to pick.
When is Cut Express the better choice?
Cut Express wins when the video starts as footage you shot:
- Talking-head reels. Claude reads the transcript, drops false starts and opens on the line that lands.
- Long video into Shorts. It finds highlight moments in long footage and cuts them vertical. See YouTube Shorts from long videos.
- Recreate a reel. Drop a reference video next to your clips and Claude rebuilds it shot by shot with your footage. The reference is never cut in.
- Finished sound and look. Word-by-word captions and 73 cinematic looks, with music that ducks under the voice.
Remotion is built for generating video from code and data more than for cutting camera footage. Choosing which seconds of a 20-minute recording to keep needs something that reads the footage. That’s the part Cut Express gives Claude.
Go through this 20-minute vlog and make three 30-second Shorts from the best moments. Bold captions, punch-in zooms on the punchlines.
Which should I pick?
Choose by what your video starts from: data and code, or footage you shot.
| Pick Remotion if… | Pick Cut Express if… |
|---|---|
| Your video is generated from data or code | Your video starts as camera footage |
| You want React-level control of motion | You want the edit done by chat |
| You’re happy to run a Node project and renders | You don’t want a codebase or render infra |
| You need thousands of templated variants | You need edits of new footage each week |
| Your team is 3 or fewer, or you’ll license | You want one monthly price with rendering included |
You can also use both: Remotion for code-generated pieces, Cut Express for the footage edits.
