Automate Video Editing Without Templates, Using Claude

Cut Express · · 5 min read

You can automate video editing with Cut Express by letting Claude make every edit decision while Cut Express renders. Instead of forcing each clip into a template, Claude watches the footage and decides every cut and caption for that video. The edit is saved as a JSON timeline you can reuse on new files.

This post covers how that works, where it saves effort and how to run it over folders of files with Claude Code.

What does it mean to automate video editing?

Video editing automation usually takes one of two forms:

  1. Templates. You fill fixed slots with clips and text. Every video has the same structure.
  2. Rules. A tool removes silences or reframes to vertical by the same rule every time.

Both are fast, but both are rigid. A template doesn’t know that one clip has a great reaction at 0:12 and another opens with dead air.

Cut Express takes a third route. Claude looks at each video through contact sheets (frames labelled with source time) and a timestamped transcript. Then it writes the edit for that footage. You give the direction once, and Claude applies judgment per video.

How is this different from a template-based automatic video editor?

Template tool Cut Express with Claude
Structure Fixed slots Decided per video
Where cuts land Set by the template On the sentence or moment that lands
Changing the style Pick another template Say it in a sentence
Reusing a style Reuse the template Reuse the timeline or the instructions
Best for Many near-identical videos Varied footage that needs choices

Templates still make sense when every video is the same shape, like a weekly stat card. For anything where the footage varies, per-video decisions help more.

What can I automate with Cut Express?

A batch of reels from one long video. Upload a podcast or a stream. Claude can find “moments” (highlights) with frame sheets, pick the stretches you want and cut each one into a vertical reel with captions. See YouTube Shorts from long videos and podcast to Shorts.

Find the 5 strongest moments in this 40-minute podcast. Make each one a 30 to 45 second 9:16 reel with karaoke captions and a hook title in the first 2 seconds.

Versions of the same edit. Every version is kept. “Make the intro tighter” or “now a 16:9 version” edits the same timeline and renders the next version. You don’t rebuild anything.

A house style. Once you like an edit, the timeline holds every caption and grade setting. Download it, or ask Claude to apply the same style to the next video.

Recreating a reference. Drop a reel you like next to your clips. Claude breaks it down shot by shot and rebuilds it with your footage. The reference itself is never cut in.

How do I automate editing for a folder of files?

For bulk work, use Claude Code. Cut Express connects with one command and a key, and Claude Code can upload local files and whole folders.

  1. Connect Cut Express in Claude Code. See the setup guide.
  2. Point Claude at a folder. For example, a folder of raw talking-head clips.
  3. Give the direction once. Format, length, caption style, grade, music.
  4. Let Claude work through the files. It inspects each clip and writes a timeline for each.
  5. Review the renders. Give notes on any that need another pass.

Upload every clip in ./raw. For each one, cut the pauses and false starts, add bold captions, grade it with a light film look, and render a 9:16 reel. Name each render after the source file.

Uploads go up to 2 GB per file on Pro and 4 GB on Ultra. Ultra can run three renders at once.

What should I still decide myself?

Automation handles the repetitive work. You still decide:

  • The direction. What the video is for, who watches it and what style fits.
  • Which moments matter. Claude ranks highlights, but you know your audience.
  • Final approval. Watch each render before you post it.

When is a template tool or a human editor a better fit?

If you need hundreds of videos that share one exact layout, a template tool may be quicker to set up. If an edit needs a story built across many scenes, or frame-level craft, a human editor with a timeline is still the safer pick. Cut Express suits the middle ground: varied footage where you want the same style without editing each clip by hand.

FAQ

Do I need to write code to automate video editing?
No. In Claude.ai or Claude Desktop you describe the edit in plain words. Claude Code helps when you want to process local folders.

Can I reuse an edit on new footage?
Yes. Ask Claude to apply the same style, or download the timeline and share it in a later chat.

How long do renders take?
Usually less than the video’s own length at 1080p. A 30-second reel is ready in well under a minute.

How are render minutes counted?
By the length of the videos rendered. Re-renders count. Failed renders never count. Pro includes 60 render minutes a month and Ultra 180.
