A split screen video shows two or more clips at the same time, each in its own part of the frame. Use stacked halves (top and bottom) for vertical Reels, TikToks and Shorts, and side by side for 16:9 YouTube. It works when the viewer has to compare or react: a before and after, a reaction to a clip, a face next to a screen recording. To make one, you put each clip in its own cell and crop it so the subject stays in view. Then you decide which clip’s sound plays.

## When is a split screen better than a cut?

A cut shows one thing, then the next. A split screen shows both at once, so use it only when the two pictures mean more together than one after the other:

| Use | Example | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Before and after | A room before and after painting | Two halves, same framing in both |
| Reaction | You reacting to a clip or a comment | The clip big, your face smaller |
| Tutorial | Your face and your screen | Screen on top, face below |
| Comparison | Two products, two settings, two takes | Two equal halves |
| Duet or collab | Two people answering the same question | Two equal halves |
| Montage | Several angles of one moment | A grid of 3 or 4 |

If the viewer needs to watch both cells at the same second to get it, split. If not, cut between them: one picture at a time is easier to follow on a phone.

## Which layout fits vertical and horizontal video?

**Vertical (9:16): stack the clips.** Two rows give each clip a 9:8 cell, close to the square most phone footage crops well into. Two side-by-side columns in 9:16 leave each cell tall and thin, which only suits full-body shots.

**Horizontal (16:9): put them side by side.** Two columns give each clip an 8:9 cell, good for a face or a product. Two rows in 16:9 make wide strips, which only suit landscapes and screen recordings.

**Unequal splits** work when one clip leads. A reaction usually gives the main clip about two thirds of the frame and the face one third. Equal halves tell the viewer both sides matter the same, which is what a comparison needs.

**Grids** of 3 or 4 suit montages. Past four cells, each picture gets too small to read on a phone.

## How do you keep the subject in frame?

A cell usually crops its clip, because half a frame can’t hold a whole shot without bars. The edges of each shot are lost. Three habits keep the subject in view:

- **Frame for the cell when you shoot.** If you know a clip goes in the top half of a vertical video, keep the subject in the middle of the frame and leave room around it.
- **Move the crop, not just the size.** Center each crop on the subject’s face or hands, not the middle of the original frame.
- **Watch the line between cells.** Heads cut by the line and text that crosses it look like mistakes. A thin gap in a solid color (white or black) makes the split look deliberate.

Captions in a split screen go over the line between the cells or at the bottom of the lower one. Keep them out of the faces. Our post on [captions for Reels](https://cut.express/blog/captions-for-reels) covers placement and style.

## Whose sound plays?

Usually just one clip’s sound plays, because two voices at once are noise. Pick the clip that carries the story and mute the other. In a reaction, that’s often the original clip with your voice over it; in a tutorial, your voice. When nobody speaks, mute both and put music under it, ducked when a voice comes in ([ducking music under voice](https://cut.express/blog/duck-music-under-voice) explains the settings).

## How do you make a split screen video with Cut Express?

[Cut Express](https://cut.express/) is a video editor you drive from Claude. You upload the clips and describe the layout; Claude writes the edit and Cut Express renders the MP4. Split screens are a scene type:

- **Layouts:** 2 or 3 columns side by side, 2 or 3 rows stacked, a grid of 3 or 4, or a custom layout of up to 4 boxes you place anywhere.
- **Unequal splits:** in a two-cell layout, the first cell takes anywhere from 20% to 80% of the frame.
- **Gaps:** the space between cells in pixels, in any color.
- **Per cell:** its own in and out, speed, crop, flip, rotation and fit (fill the cell, fit the whole picture, or fit it over a blurred copy of itself). Each cell is centered on the point you choose, so a face stays in view.
- **Sound:** the first video cell plays its sound by default and the others start muted; you can set any cell’s volume.
- **One look** across the whole layout, so clips from two cameras sit together.

For a small face in a corner instead of halves, Cut Express places picture-in-picture overlays, round or rectangular, with a border and a shadow.

Before cutting, Claude looks at your clips frame by frame, so “show the moment the paint goes on next to the finished wall” lands on the right seconds.

A prompt that gets a good first version:

> “Make a 15-second vertical before-and-after. The empty room on top, the finished room below, a 6-pixel white line between them, the sound off and soft music under it, then the finished room full screen for the last 3 seconds.”

Then give notes like “move the top crop down a bit” and the next version renders. For more layouts in vertical video, see [horizontal video to vertical](https://cut.express/blog/horizontal-video-to-vertical).

## FAQ

### What is a split screen video?

A video that shows two or more clips at the same time, each in its own part of the frame, to compare, react or show two angles at once.

### What is the best layout for a TikTok or Reel split screen?

Two clips stacked, top and bottom. Each half is close to square, which most phone footage crops into without losing the subject.

### Can the two clips have different lengths?

Yes. In Cut Express a cell shorter than the scene holds its last frame until the scene ends, or you set each cell’s in and out so they match.

### Can I make a split screen from photos?

Yes. Any cell can be a photo, which suits before-and-after shots taken with a phone camera.
