To speed up a video, select the clip, open its speed setting and raise it above 1x. Use about 1.25x for talking, 2x to 4x for cooking and setup steps, and 4x or more for a time-lapse feel. Every editor has the control: Speed in phone apps, Clip Speed/Duration in Premiere Pro, the speed control in iMovie. The clip gets shorter by the same factor, so 20 seconds at 2x plays in 10. The choices that matter come after the slider: which speed suits the shot, constant speed or a ramp, and what to do with the sound.

## Why does a slow clip lose viewers?

Most clips feel slow because the action takes longer than the idea. A hand stirring a pot for 12 seconds says “stirring” in the first two. On a Reel or a Short, the rest of those seconds is time for the thumb to move on.

Cutting is one fix. Speeding up is the other. It keeps the whole action on screen: the viewer still sees the dough rise or the room get painted, in a fraction of the time.

## Which speed should you use for each shot?

| Shot | Speed | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Talking to camera | 1.1x to 1.25x | Feels snappier and stays natural. Above that, voices start to sound rushed. |
| Cooking, crafts, setup steps | 2x to 4x | The process stays readable while the waiting goes. |
| Walking, driving, travel | 4x | Turns a long move into a quick transition between places. |
| Cleaning, painting, building | 4x or more | Reads as a time-lapse: the result appearing is the point. |
| A moment you want to feel big | A ramp: fast, then slow | The change of speed is the effect. |

A good test: watch the sped-up clip with the sound off. If you can still tell what happens, the speed is right. If the motion turns into a blur, go one step slower.

## Constant speed or a speed ramp?

**Constant speed** plays the whole clip at one rate. It’s the right choice for most shots: a step in a tutorial, a drive, a cleanup.

**A speed ramp** changes the rate inside the clip. The classic shape is fast, then slow at the moment that matters, then fast again. Picture a skater flying toward the jump. The clip slows as they leave the ground and snaps back on the landing. Ramps work on action and on reveals. On a talking clip they only distort the voice.

Two rules keep ramps clean:

- **Slow down on the peak, not before it.** The slow part should start a beat before the action and end right after.
- **Use one ramp per moment.** Three ramps in ten seconds read as a glitch, not a style.

## What happens to the sound when you speed up?

The clip’s own sound speeds up with it. At 1.25x a voice still works. At 2x and above, voices sound rushed and room noise turns into a hiss, so most editors do one of two things:

1. **Mute the clip and put music under it.** The usual choice for time-lapses and process shots. See [how to add music to video](https://cut.express/blog/how-to-add-music-to-video) for picking and trimming a track.
2. **Keep the voice at normal speed and speed up only the b-roll.** For tutorials, cut between you talking at 1x and the hands-on shots at 2x to 4x. Our [b-roll guide](https://cut.express/blog/what-is-b-roll) covers when to cut away.

Sound effects help a fast section land: a whoosh where a ramp starts, a click where it ends. [Sound effects for YouTube](https://cut.express/blog/sound-effects-for-youtube-videos) lists the kinds and where they go.

## How do you speed up a video with Cut Express?

[Cut Express](https://cut.express/) is a video editor you drive from Claude. You upload your clips and say what you want; Claude writes the edit and Cut Express renders the MP4. Speed is part of the edit:

- **Constant speed** from 0.25x to 4x per clip: “play the setup at 3x”.
- **Speed ramps** with up to 8 points per clip, from 0.2x to 4x: “fast run-up, slow on the jump, fast again on the landing”. The clip’s sound follows the ramp.
- **Reverse and boomerang** for clips up to 60 seconds, and a **freeze** of up to 10 seconds on the last frame.

Before it cuts, Claude looks at your footage frame by frame, so “speed up the part where I’m sanding” lands on the right seconds instead of a guess. Captions from your voice keep working on clips at constant speed.

A prompt that gets a good first version:

> “Use my painting clips for a 20-second Reel. Play the taping and the first coat at 4x, ramp down to normal speed when I peel the tape off, mute the clips and put an upbeat track under it.”

Then give notes like “a bit slower on the first coat” and the next version renders.

## FAQ

### How do I speed up a video on my phone?

Open the clip in your editing app, find Speed (often under the clip’s options) and drag it above 1x. For more than one or two clips, it’s faster to describe the whole edit once.

### Does speeding up a video lower its quality?

No. The frames stay the same; some are skipped. A clip shot at a higher frame rate looks smoother when slowed down, not when sped up.

### How long can a sped-up video be?

As long as your plan renders: up to 10 minutes on Pro and up to 30 on Ultra. Render minutes count the finished length, so a clip at 4x uses a quarter of the minutes of the original.

### Can I slow a clip down too?

Yes, down to 0.25x at constant speed and 0.2x inside a ramp.
