To reverse a video, select the clip in your editor and turn on its reverse option: Reverse in most phone apps, Reverse Speed in Premiere Pro’s Speed/Duration box, Reverse in CapCut’s edit menu. The clip then plays from its last frame to its first, at the same length. The hard part isn’t the button. It’s picking a shot that looks good backwards, trimming it to the right second and deciding what to do with the sound.

## Why reverse a clip at all?

A reversed shot makes the viewer look twice. Water jumps back into a glass, a torn page mends itself, a skater lands before they take off. On a Reel or a Short, that double take is the hook: it’s a moment people replay to understand.

Played the wrong way, though, it just looks like a mistake. A person walking backwards for eight seconds isn’t an effect. It’s a glitch the viewer scrolls past.

## Which shots look good played backwards?

The rule: reverse shots where the direction of time is obvious. If nobody can tell the clip is reversed, the effect does nothing.

| Shot | Why it works backwards |
|---|---|
| Pouring, splashing, spilling | Liquid flowing up breaks physics in an instant. |
| Throwing or dropping an object | The object “flies” back into the hand. |
| Tearing, breaking, crumbling | Things rebuild themselves. |
| Smoke, steam, powder, confetti | Particles gather instead of spreading. |
| Unboxing or unwrapping | The product packs itself: a clean product reveal in reverse. |
| A jump into water | The diver rises out of the pool onto the board. |

What doesn’t work: talking to camera (the mouth moves wrong and the voice turns to noise), long walking shots, and anything where the reverse lasts longer than about two or three seconds.

## Reverse or boomerang?

**Reverse** plays the clip backwards once. Use it for the “impossible” moment: the splash that un-splashes.

**Boomerang** plays the clip forward and then backwards, so the shot lasts twice as long and ends where it started. It loops cleanly, which is why it suits short, repeating moments: a toast with glasses, a hair flip, a jump. Keep the source clip short, one to two seconds. A ten-second boomerang is twenty seconds of back and forth, and the joke is over long before it ends.

## What happens to the sound in a reversed video?

The clip’s own sound plays backwards too. Voices become gibberish and most real sounds turn into a strange rising whoosh. There are three ways to handle it:

1. **Mute the clip and put music under the section.** The usual choice. The track carries the moment while the picture does the trick. See [how to add music to video](https://cut.express/blog/how-to-add-music-to-video).
2. **Add a sound effect where the reverse starts.** A rewind or whoosh tells the ear something changed. [Add sound effects to video](https://cut.express/blog/add-sound-effects-to-video) covers where they go.
3. **Keep the reversed sound on purpose.** It works for a second or two as a creepy or comic beat. Longer than that, it only sounds broken.

Captions made from speech can’t read reversed words, so leave captions off reversed sections, or write the text yourself as an on-screen line.

## How do you reverse a video on a phone or computer?

Most editors hide reverse in the clip’s speed or edit menu:

- **CapCut (phone and desktop):** select the clip, tap Edit, then Reverse. It processes the clip and replaces it.
- **iMovie on iPhone:** iMovie has no reverse for clips. You’d need another app.
- **Premiere Pro:** right-click the clip, Speed/Duration, tick Reverse Speed.
- **DaVinci Resolve:** right-click, Change Clip Speed, tick Reverse Speed.

In all of them, trim first. Reverse only the second or two you need, then place the reversed piece next to the normal footage so the viewer sees the action happen forward, then rewind.

## How do you reverse a video with Cut Express?

[Cut Express](https://cut.express/) is a video editor you drive from Claude. You upload the clips and say what you want; Claude writes the edit and Cut Express renders the MP4. Reverse is a setting on any clip in that edit:

- **Reverse** plays a clip backwards, picture and sound, for clips up to 60 seconds.
- **Boomerang** plays it forward then backwards, twice the length, also up to 60 seconds of clip.
- **Freeze** holds the last frame for up to 10 seconds, handy to pause on the moment before the rewind.
- Clip **speed** from 0.25x to 4x works with reverse, so a rewind can play fast or slow. (Speed ramps are the one thing that can’t be combined with reverse.)

Before it cuts, Claude looks at your footage frame by frame, so “reverse the moment the water hits the glass” lands on the right seconds instead of a guess. Speech captions skip reversed and boomerang clips on their own.

A prompt that gets a good first version:

> “Make a 12-second Reel from my pour clip. Show the pour at normal speed, then reverse the last 2 seconds so the coffee flies back into the pot. Mute the clip, add a whoosh where the reverse starts and a lo-fi track under it.”

Then give notes like “start the reverse half a second later” and the next version renders.

## FAQ

### Can I reverse only part of a video?

Yes. Split the clip at the second where the reverse should start, and reverse only that piece. In Cut Express you say which seconds and Claude splits the clip for you.

### Does reversing a video lower its quality?

No. The same frames play in the opposite order. Quality only drops if the app re-encodes at a low setting.

### How do I make a boomerang from a video I already shot?

Trim the clip to one or two seconds, then play it forward followed by its reverse. Apps with a boomerang option do both steps at once.

### Why does my reversed video sound weird?

Because the sound is reversed too. Mute the clip and add music, or add a whoosh where the rewind starts.
